Listen to This Veteran’s WW2 Story in His Own Words

World War 2

Daniel Moon is 96 years old, but when he was only 17, he experienced the horrors of WW2. As part of a series on NPR, he sat down to recount his experience on the battlefield.

Sergeant Daniel Moon began his military career in 1944 when he joined the United States Navy. Wanting to do his part in World War II, he chose the Navy because it was the branch that would allow him to enlist at the age of 17.

Being a World War Two hero, apparently, wasn’t enough, as he later also served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Fortunately, thanks to StoryCorps’ Military Voices Initiative, we have the opportunity to hear Daniel’s story of first combat from the veteran himself.

In the incredible interview, he describes being surrounded by flying bullets and seeing the trench line open up “like the devil opening his mouth to show his fangs.” his story is something everyone should hear.

For a firsthand account of a young man’s experience on the frontlines, listen to Daniel Moon’s full interview and read the transcript here.
