In part on of our “Generations” series, we take a look back at the 1940s. These were certainly different times in America. It may be hard for younger generations to understand what life was really like in those days. However, life today would be much different had it not been for some of the changes that took place during this time in our history.

American Pride Was Big

Directly on the heels of the great depression, the 1940s began as a time of cautious optimism and rising pride. The completion of Mount Rushmore on June 26, 1941, marked a turning point for the country. Can you imagine a time without the famed monument? Of course, later that same year, the attack on Pearl Harbor would cause another big change. But it only increased American resolve.

America in Another World War

World War I was supposed to be the war to end all wars. Clearly, it did not work out that way. World War II was far bigger than its predecessor with higher casualties around the globe. The threat was like nothing seen before. Even so, America and its allies came together to stand up against Hitler in the defense of freedom and democracy.

Americans United for a Better Tomorrow

While brave men fought on the front lines of the war, Women stepped into the working world to keep things moving at home. Even more groundbreaking, the Six -Tripple-Eight, an all-female, all-African-American unit served in Europe. They may not have been in the trenches, but they forever changed the roles of women and people of color in our military. There are many more examples of how we all came together in the 1940s to make life better for future generations.

Why We Should Remember the 1940s

The 1940s changed America in so many ways. Of course, the big moments changed our world, but we must remember the actions of the individuals. Americans in the 1940s gave so much. Unfortunately, many, seem to have been forgotten in retirement. That is why we urge Congress to pass a bill we call The Greatest Generation Benefits Act. Learn more and sign our petition here.
