Why The Greatest Generation was Vital to America’s WW2 Success
World War II was a turning point for the United States and the world. Had it not been for the efforts of the greatest generation, the war could have turned out very differently.
World War II Was a Different Kind of War
World War I was called the “war to end all wars.” Clearly, that title was a bit of a stretch. The Second World War, however, really took things to another level. The threat was great and there was a very real feeling that the world would never be the same after. The battle was fought on land, air, and sea like never before. in many ways, the world was unprepared.

The Greatest Generation was Ready for the Fight
For members of the greatest generation, however, the choice was clear. Something had to be done to stop the forces of Hitler and Tojo from stamping out freedom and democracy around the world. What is truly unique about the heroes of the WWII era is how they came together for a common cause. Many Americans, young and old volunteered to go fight. Meanwhile, Everyday citizens stepped up on the homefront and sacrificed to support the war effort. Without the hard work of these heroes, things may have turned out differently.
What About the Greatest Generation Today?
While massive numbers of Americans served in World War II, only around 120,000 are still with us in 2023. Beyond the war veterans, many of those who helped keep the country going are still living. Unfortunately, many of these great Americans are struggling today. It’s sad that a number of our heroes now live in poverty because of appallingly low Social Security benefits.
