Drones Reveal Hidden Details from The Battle of the Bulge
The Battle of the Bulge was a significant point in World War II. One of the largest battles in the history of the U.S. military, it has been recounted and studied many times over. However, there is still a great deal left unknown. Recently, a research team uncovered some fascinating lost pieces of history using drone technology.
The team conducted a high-resolution survey of the former battlefield using LiDAR technology mounted on drones offering a new perspective. This advanced technology involves laser imaging that essentially allows researchers to “see through” the forest canopy to reveal elements we wouldn’t find otherwise.
The team was able to produce high-resolution maps of the region which they used to gain a more complete view of the battlefield than anything we’ve seen before. Using a collection of new and old data, they were able to uncover dugouts, foxholes, trenches, bomb craters, and even artillery emplacements.
Putting all the pieces together, this research allows scientists and historians to recreate a detailed battle map and connect with history in a brand-new and exciting way. Read more about the incredible discoveries here.
