Veterans at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home now have a new way to enjoy the outdoors while staying busy. Activities are important for retirement home residents. Having something to keep the mind and body busy is essential for overall wellbeing. For these residents, a little bit of community action gave them an exciting new opportunity to get outside.

When some of these retirement home veterans said they missed gardening, volunteers came up with something great. Local businesses donated planter boxes as well as assorted seeds and plants. This kind gesture provided residents with a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the outdoors while providing for themselves and their community.

The idea is to allow the retirement home staff to prepare meals for the residents with the herbs and vegetables they grew themselves. It’s a fantastic program that lets these veterans develop a sense of community while getting out and getting their hands dirty. Read the full story here.
