Four Retirement Myths According to 68-Year-Old Who ‘Un-Retired’
George Jerjian was forced into early retirement in 2007 because of a serious medical diagnosis. Fortunately, his prognosis improved and he was able to start a new chapter in his life. In fact, after becoming bored with his post-work life, he decided to ‘un-retire’ and start his own business. Now he works to re-frame people’s thinking when it comes to retirement. Recently, he shared four retirement myths we need to ignore.
- Life follows a linear path. George argues that while people think you have to follow the ‘usual steps’ of getting an education, starting a family and career, and then retiring, many people start a new career or other major life paths in their 60s and 70s.
- You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Many believe that at some point, you are too old to learn something new. If this were true, there would not be so many older Americans earning new degrees or starting new businesses.
- Your best life is in your 20s and 30s. There is a lot of living left to do after 40. Jerjian makes a point to remind us that these old notions of aging are outdated and need not affect our thinking.
- You shouldn’t think about death. It may sound grim, but remembering one’s mortality can be an important part of living one’s life. George Jerjian learned this when he received troubling news from his oncologist. Now, with a new attitude toward life, he encourages everyone to look at life a little differently.
