Arlington National Cemetery is an incredible tribute to the memory of our fallen heroes. Unfortunately, many will not have the opportunity to make the trip. Thanks to Honor Flight, Korean War veteran Don Cooper had the chance to pay it a visit. Even more remarkable, is what he did after.

Inspired by what he had seen, Cooper set out to give the fallen veterans of his community a “Little Arlington” of their own. At the same time, the city of Harrisburg was looking to build on its history. It became apparent that local veterans who had lost their lives were not getting the honor they deserved. Sadly, only 63 deteriorating wooden crosses marked the graves of local heroes. Of course, the cemetery was in need of renovation. However, this was a daunting task.

The expense of the undertaking was, no doubt, a steep hill to climb. Fortunately, Don Cooper was up to the challenge. He made it his personal mission to collect donations for the renovation. After raising enough money, Harrisburg got its “Little Arlington” where currently 242 crosses and three monuments stand honoring those who served. Here at The Greatest Generation, we support older Americans who sacrificed so much – including our veterans – and strive to help in any way we can. This is why we are working hard to get Congress to pass legislation we call The Greatest Generation Benefits Act. This bill would change the lives of many great heroes who fought in World War 2 and Korea as well as all the members of the greatest generation. Learn more and sign our petition here.
