Study Looks at How The Omicron Variant Impacts Health Compared to Other Forms of Covid-19
Covid-19 has been an ongoing threat around the world. The good news is that there have been many advancements in prevention and treatment. Unfortunately, it seems like often when we start making progress toward normalcy, the pandemic takes a new turn. Most recently, concern over the Omicron Variant has spread.
Researchers at the University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Medicine have released some interesting findings on Omicron. One of the biggest questions about this virus is how it compares to other versions and if it is more or less dangerous.
Preliminary research indicates that this variant could in some ways be both more and less of a risk to some people. Dr. Michael Chan Chi-wai and his research team found that the omicron variant seems to replicate 70 times faster in human airways than the Delta variant. While this sounds troubling, there is more to consider.
The same research team determined that while the virus replicates much faster in the airways, it reproduces more than 10 times slower in the actual human lung tissue. While this does not give a clear picture of the risks of Omicron, it is important information to have as research continues. Read more about Dr. Chan Chi-wai’s findings here.
