(Video) Korean War Veteran Reflects on Her Groundbreaking Service with the Air Force

Amelia Cunningham is a Korean War veteran who served at a time when black women were not often seen in the military. When she joined in 1954, Amelia was one of very few African-American women to enlist. Clearly this dynamic has shifted since then with a much more diverse military today.

In the past, people of color served bravely in the military and yet still faced segregation at home and abroad. At the same time, the idea of women serving in military positions was controversial, to say the least. If it had not been for the efforts of those like Amelia opening doors for others, we may not have come as far as we have today.

Cunningham, however, credits her military service as opening up a world of opportunity for her. While preparing for an honor flight to the Korean War memorial in Washington, she reflected on her service and what it means to her. Her only regret, she tells WGN News, is that she did not stay in the Air Force longer. Check out her interview below.
